Bath, New York

New York? Ah, but not that New York. This is Bath, New York State, far away in spirit from the Big Apple; grape juice would be a more appropriate fruit comparison, as Bath is in the middle of the beautiful Finger Lakes wine growing region many hours' drive north-west of the big city.

Indeed, we had a few free samples at Bully Hill vineyards overlooking Keuka Lake so were feeling particularly well-disposed to this part of the States.

But Bath, NY, is a great place anyway, full of friendly locals who all know who we are and what we're doing (news travels fast in a town of 7000 like this where everyone knows each other). Everyone kept offering us lifts and trips and guided tours of places of interest, of which there are plenty. Up at Mossy Hill you can look down on Bath, in scenery surprisingly reminiscent of the view from Solsbury Hill towards the real Bath (above). Was Bath NY named after Lady Bath or this view? Historians cannot decide...

Local radio interviews this morning, on Jim and Dave in the morning. We even recorded a couple of jingles in our delightful British accents, and I remembered to say 'Barrrrth'. One listener donated to Imperial Cancer Research after hearing us on air - thanks very much Theresa Sullivan, your cash will go to the charity and not to pay for our lunch!

We swam in Keuka Lake and enjoyed an evening swopping tales with Peggy from the local paper. Thanks to Darlene, Jay, the other Peggy, Willis, the Bath National Hotel (stay there! it's great) and the rest who made our stay such fun.
